Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2

The Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2 is a maritime patrol aircraft developed by the United Kingdom and used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF). The aircraft was developed based on the de Havilland Comet, the world's first jet airliner, and can carry torpedoes, mines, bombs, sonobuoys for tracking submarines and even Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

During Operation Granby, Nimrod MR2s were based in Seeb, Oman.
  • Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, Nimrods helped enforce the United Nations embargo on Iraq and occupied Kuwait by maintaining a plot of all merchant shipping in the region, and challenging 6,552 ships.

  • After hostilities started, Nimrod sorties were flown in support of the USS Midway (an aircraft carrier) group, locating and identifying Iraqi Navy units and directing attack aircraft (principally Royal Navy Lynxes) to these targets. Nimrods also participated in Search And Recovery("SAR") operations to rescue downed aircraft.
